Energy planning for territories

ENERGY, CITIES AND TERRITORIES

Through the rising environmental and climate change awareness in the last two decades, the role of energy planning within a territory has gained importance. Planning for energy and resource use can help conserve energy, use energy more efficiently, while also developing renewable resources that will reduce the environmental impact of our energy use.

Energy planning starts at a local level, in the neighbourhood, municipality, city or territory

Energy planning starts at a local level, in the neighbourhood, municipality, city or territory. Energy consumption in the residential, tertiary and transportation sectors is responsible for the major part of the GHG emissions. The use of integrated and multidisciplinary evaluation methods as well as tools suited to identify an optimized combination of measures that will increase the overall energy chain efficiency in territories are crucial. EIFER has developed tools and methods to support decision makers in the field of energy planning which range:

  • from assessing the local energy production, consumption as well as GHG emissions for different sectors
  • to evaluating alternative future energy scenarios on the long-term energy demand and prospects of their territory.

Today, one of the major challenges in the field of local energy planning lies in the acquisition of the right data sets and the associated methods to fill gaps of lacking data. Furthermore, comprehension of the interaction of these data in the different sectors is needed.
