ENERGY RESOURCES AND DECENTRALIZED PRODUCTION
The use of geothermal energy for the purpose of power generation is linked to the heat and therefore the temperature in the earth’s subsurface. The shallower high temperatures can be reached the more economic is the production of geothermal power.

In the field of shallow geothermal systems (for heating and cooling), EIFER is mainly working on quality control, planning and visualization tools, new backfill materials and concepts for borehole heat exchanger systems. New innovative self circulating heat extraction techniques with gravitational heat pipes, e.g. self-acting de-icing and snow melting systems are investigated as well.

In deep geothermal systems (for the production of electricity and large amounts of heat) deep wells for circulation of thermal water or steam are used to extract energy from hot geothermal reservoirs. EIFER analyzes the tectonic, thermal-hydraulic and hydro-geological behaviour of such systems, and investigates corrosion of used materials in geothermal installations.
