Job position nr. 18J033, Research fellow f/m/d

Title: “Technical, economic and environmental evaluation of decentralised energy technologies and systems”
The European Institute for Energy Research EDF-KIT EWIV (EIfER), established by EDF and KIT, located in Karlsruhe is currently looking for a

Research Fellow f/m/d
in the competence field "Environmental/Applied Economics” within the “Energy Transition, Markets, Environment” research group.

The investigation of new trends within the energy system and the identification of new or the consolidation of existing business models require a holistic view. EIFER integrates the two main strands of applied economics - by taking into account methods for the economic assessment and evaluation of energy systems - as well as methods for the assessment of environmental impacts and the identification of opportunities of these systems.
Given the cross-cutting nature of the requested competence, several of the tasks described below will be conducted in close collaboration with EIFER’s technical working groups on “low carbon hydrogen systems” as well as “local multi-energy systems”.

The assigned tasks involve
- Monitoring and analysing decentralised energy technologies and local hybrid systems from a regulatory, technical and market perspective
- Assessing the environmental performance of technologies relevant for EIFER (fuel cells, electrolyser cells, micro-cogeneration, etc.)

Required qualifications
The job applicant should hold a Master degree or equivalent in industrial engineering, environmental economics, or applied economics, and ideally has gained first professional experiences.
- Technological (and regulatory) knowledge on cogeneration, hydrogen fuel and electrolyser cells as well as on other decentralised energy technologies; a know-how on material recycling industrial processes is seen as advantage
- Ability to understand and analyse economics of decentralised energy technologies as well as their interactions with energy markets
- Understanding of environmental assessment methods such as life-cycle assessment (LCA), knowledge of relevant tools would be an asset
- Ability to work independently and responsibly in a structured way and to convey clear and efficient messages (orally and written); interdisciplinary and analytical thinking; ability to identify suitable methods and development of tools
- Advanced knowledge of MS Excel, competences in programming language (e.g. Python) and management of database systems are seen as an advantage
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, very good level of French and ideally German

The applicant should enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team of researchers. The duration of the position is initially limited to two years, starting as soon as possible.

The salary is based on qualification and experience according to TV-L (100%).

Job position nr. 18J032, Research fellow f/m/d

The European Institute for Energy Research EDF-KIT EWIV (EIFER), established by EDF and KIT, located in Karlsruhe is currently looking for a
Research Fellow f/m/d
in order to further develop the competences in the field of "Policy Analysis and Energy Market Studies" within the “Energy Transition, Markets, Environment” research group.

The increasing share of intermittent electricity generation, digitalisation and the shift towards decentralisation challenge the market design put in place by EU commission and EU member states for the European energy sector. Decarbonisation, market integration of renewables, synergies between energy sectors, security of supply and distributional effects are examples for key challenges that need to be tackled simultaneously by policy makers. EIFER monitors measures that European governments and utilities propose or put into place in order to cope with these challenges and analyses the impact of these measures on energy markets and business models.

As research fellow you will be in charge of analysing policies, fundamental drivers or incentives in the field of electricity and flexibility markets. Focus topics will include power networks, storage and flexibility services and emerging business models for digital services, amongst others. This implies the political and legal analysis of larger reform projects with special regard to social transformations as well as the quantitative assessment of energy market developments and related business opportunities.

The assigned tasks involve
- Monitoring and analysis of regulatory developments in energy markets with focus on decentralised electricity and heat generation, writing regular insight notes on specific measures
- Quantitative analysis of energy market data
- Model-based assessment of new business concepts
- Exchange with relevant stakeholders of the energy sector
- Regular business trips: participation in conferences and communication of results to clients

Required qualifications
The job applicant should hold a Master degree or equivalent in economics, industrial engineering or political science and ideally has gained first professional experiences.
- Profound knowledge on energy markets, renewable energy and related policy frameworks
- Synthetic and analytic thinking and the ability to understand systemic interactions with other fields
- A very good command of German and English, French is seen as an advantage
- Good knowledge in data analysis and management of database systems is seen as an advantage
- Previous knowledge in simulation or optimization approaches and programming are seen as advantages

The applicant should enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team of researchers. The duration of the position is initially limited to two years, starting as soon as possible.
The salary is based on qualification and experience according to TV-L (100%).
