Tool development for territories

ENERGY, CITIES AND TERRITORIES

The development of tools for energy research at EIFER aims to take benefit of the use of emerging technologies and new data sources at regional scales. Through simulations, local scenarios are constructed.

New tools and methods for energy research are needed, to be able to deal with the new nature of the data and state-of-the-art methodologies

The rapid development of computation power, information technologies and data availability has a large impact on the quality, quantity and sources of energy relevant information at regional scales. Therefore, new tools and methods for energy research are needed, to be able to deal with the new nature of the data and state-of-the-art methodologies. They help to understand, analyze and simulate the complexity of territorial energy systems.

The set of tools available at EIFER ranges from the sensitization of local authorities to the calculation of energy demand and production. GIS enables the use and analysis of local spatial and temporal data, and therefore, the calculation and simulation of potentials of renewable energy resources, the localization of infrastructures e.g. for electrical vehicles, the cartography of actions and effects on urban neighbourhoods. Data on urban morphologies from 3D imagery are used for the estimation of energy demand and production in urban areas. Furthermore, agent-based models are established for the simulation of stochastic processes of complex systems.
