What you can expect

What we expect

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in energy economics, environmental or energy governance, political sciences with a strong energy focus or energy engineering
  • More than 5 years of working experience or a very high level in one or more of the above-mentioned areas
  • A PhD in one of the above fields would be considered a plus

Desired profile

  • Experience with scientific research methods (optimization and/or simulation of energy systems, operation research, etc.), both qualitative and quantitative, including an interest to further develop them
  • Successfully applied research methods in policy evaluation and/or market design
  • Experience in handling multi stakeholder projects and management of research or industrial projects
  • Knowledge of the energy sector, industry and ongoing politics
  • Good understanding of the German and European Union political ecosystems
  • Knowledge on hydrogen supply chains and hydrogen economy will be considered a plus including basic knowledge about GIS applications

  • technical and economic analysis on the conversion technologies, based on process engineering approaches.
  • detailed technical studies applied to projects, related to the design, operation, and integration of the technologies in the energy systems.

What you can expect

  • Detailed technical and economic studies on a range of bio/synthetic-fuels conversion technologies.
  • Contribution to the design of alternative (bio/synthetic) fuels concepts / technologies and their integration in the energy system (flexibility, environmental impacts etc.)
  • Strategic studies and analysis for EIFER’s clients (operational entities and strategic department of a utility)
  • Actively contribute to the development of EIFER’s research agenda and enhance its scientific recognition in the bio/synthetic fuels field:
    • respond to public-funded project calls (European / German call for projects)

What we expect

  • A master’s degree or equivalent in a related domain: chemistry, process engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering

Internship description

The work during the internship will start from a strong base of review of passive and active cooling solutions at a building, district and urban level, solutions based on nature (e.g. green roofs) on a building and urban level. In parallel, active and passive solutions will be ranked according to a number of indicators: energy (consumption), environmental (carbon footprint) and financial (investment and operating costs) impact. The trainee will use EDF R&D and EDF group subsidiaries feedback by conducting interviews and meetings with the relevant experts.

  • Determination of the relevant indicators, identification of the solutions and their characteristics, comparative analysis
  • Propose and build a multi-criteria and operational approach for emerging and proven solutions, adapted to different climatic contexts.

Since years, EDF via EIFER deeply extended its activities in research and development on non-carbon energy technologies (electrolysis, fuel cell and battery) and its know-how in the elaboration of high performing ceramic materials and cell processing has been increasing.

The training is based on a twofold objective:

  • Set up a new electrochemical testing facility for various operation conditions and use it to investigate innovative synthesis of ammonia;
  • Assess the integration of new materials / layers into an electrochemical assembly dedicated to ammonia synthesis.

Different kind of systems will be manufactured and characterized:

  • Macro- and microscopic analysis by SEM, EDX and XRD;
  • In-situ electrochemical measurements by impedance measurement and IV curves.

The assigned tasks involve

  • A literature review of the state-of-the-art
  • Manufacture of ceramic samples
  • Electrochemical measurements and data treatment/analysis
  • Regular reporting to the head of the laboratory
  • Maintenance and organization of the laboratory

  • Improving existing codebase for simulation of deployment of wind energy by
  • Fixing small inconsistencies and structural problems
  • Writing unit tests
  • Adding new features

Required qualifications/skills/interests

The position is aiming to Master-students in a programming-related discipline.

  • Familiarity with Python (experience with pandas)
  • Familiarity with Git version control (pushing, pulling, merging, etc.)
  • Independent research via documentation & other online resources
  • A good level in English

Optional skills

  • Familiarity with at least one major database system (e.g. PostgreSQL or MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server)
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information System concepts (GIS)
  • Familiarity with the Linux command line
  • Knowledge of French would be an asset

Are you interested in working on data management of power market data?

The European Institute for Energy Research EDF-KIT EWIV (EIFER) is looking for a
Student assistant (f/m/d)
in the research group “Energy Transition, Markets, Environment”.

The team “Policy Analysis and Energy Market Studies” heavily relies on clean data to perform data analysis for its research and consulting activities. These data must be extracted from different sources, cleaned and stored in order for it to be useful for the team. To this end, a Python package is being developed. Furthermore, to further valorise this effort, we aim at providing institute-wide access through a data catalog and visualization of data on energy markets.

With its applied research orientation EIFER is bridging the gap between science and industry for more than 20 years. The assigned tasks involve
  • Further development of a Python package managing data extraction, cleaning and storage tasks
  • Working on the integration of a data catalog into internal knowledge management system
  • Working on new functionalities such as the connection to visualisation tools (e.g. Dash, PowerBI)
Required qualifications / skills / interests

The position is aimed at Master-students in engineering and computer science

  • Very good English language skills. German language is a plus
  • Interest in the power system and power markets
  • Familiar with Python and SQL concepts
  • Basic knowledge on front-end development: Javascript, HTML, CSS
  • Knowledge on Django and Vue frameworks is a plus

Title: Policy Assessment in the German Energy Transition

Student assistant (f/m/d)
in the research group “Energy Transition, Markets, Environment”.

The team “Policy Analysis and Energy Market Studies” in the above research group heavily relies on policies identification with high impact on end consumers and markets. By studying, synthesizing and explaining the impact of renewable, industrial and other policies within the energy sector, the student assistant will help describe policy design(s) and reflect on its effectiveness within the energy sector. Effects originating from policies design interacting with national and European policy and comparison to French policies (if applicable) in the energy sector complete the analysis task. Results of the tasks will be integrated in a large EDF R&D research project.

  • Studying and reflecting on interactions to existing national and EU policies or its evolutions
  • Ideally working with science-based methods on the impact of policies on end consumers and the industry

Required qualifications/skills/interests

The position is aiming to Master students in (energy) economics, business administration, political science or energy engineering with a minor in economics or alike.

  • Knowledge on (industrial/renewable) policies and impact assessment and on economic approaches for policy evaluation
  • Interest in energy policy within the German “Energiewende”
  • A very good level in German and English (written and spoken) is mandatory, a good level in French would be considered a plus
  • Basic knowledge on power markets
  • Professional handling of Microsoft Office applications such as PowerPoint, Word, MS-teams, Excel, etc.
  • Clear and fast thinker with strong clear communication skills
